Augustana's student newspaper receives 13 awards

2014 Mar 28

The Augustana Observer received 13 awards at the 31st annual Illinois College Press Association's convention. The Illinois College Press Association is a membership organization for four-year colleges in Illinois. Member schools can then nominate individual student journalists for awards in 29 categories, and students are then able to attend the annual convention.

On February 22, Augustana student-journalists attended the convention along with assistant professor, Dr. Jared Schroeder, from the department of communication studies.

Augustana students received awards in a number of categories, including sports news story, in-depth reporting, front page layout, sports game story, sports page design, sports feature story, sports photo, photo essay, feature photo and feature page design.

Among the students who were recognized:

Shylee Garrett, majoring in Multimedia Journal Mass Comm, English with a Writing Emphasis from Vernon Hills.

Dr. Schroeder said, "It's pretty neat to hear 'Augustana College' called over and over during the awards ceremony. I was proud of the students and glad they had a chance to be recognized in front of peers from schools from throughout the state."
