Augustana student/Freedom Scholar Sarah Meirose returned to DC for Liberty Seminar

2014 Feb 18

Augustana junior political science major Sarah Meirose, from Quincy, Ill., was named a Freedom Scholar by the Fund for American Studies. This past summer Meirose spent her summer in Washington D. C. on an academic internship and was chosen as one of top interns in her program, earning her another opportunity in February.

Only the top of each program were invited back to be a part of the Liberty Seminar which took place February 7-9 in Arlington, Va. There were seven Socratic-style discussion sessions over the course of the three days led by Dr. Alexei Marcoux of Loyola University Chicago and Dr. Richard Boyd of Georgetown University. The goal of this seminar was for participants to explore some of the key philosophical questions that arise when politically free states seek to establish or encourage a certain conception of material equality.

While in D.C. this summer, Meirose took two classes at George Mason University focusing on economics and free market economy and worked as an intern as well. She visited the CIA, the pentagon, and attended a briefing to the House of Representatives.

"My DC internship gave me the direction that I needed by exposing me to all the different elements of Washington; working for a nonprofit, attending briefings at various agencies, taking classes, and writing up releases on hearings on the Hill," said Meirose.

Meirose also expressed her thanks to Augustana, as her experience was made possible by Augie Choice, the Community Engagement Center (CEC) and the political science department at Augustana.

"I was so excited to represent both Augustana and the Fund for American Studies at the Liberty Seminar, and I look forward to discussing economic policies with former colleagues and political scholars."

The Liberty Seminar is cosponsored by The Fund for American Studies and Liberty Fund, Inc. Based in Indianapolis, Liberty Fund, Inc. is a private educational foundation established to encourage the study of the ideal of a society of free and responsible individuals and sponsors over 150 conferences a year throughout the United States, Canada, Latin America and Europe.
