Lauren Schneiderbauer Accepted Into Veterinary School

2012 Mar 5

Getting accepted to veterinary school is tough. There simply aren't enough first-year seats for all the qualified students who want to become veterinarians.

Augustana College has an early-acceptance agreement with the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine (UICVM). Lauren Schneiderbauer, a sophomore from Sterling, Ill., majoring in biology, was one of seven Augustana sophomores who applied and has been accepted to UICVM. They may elect to participate in a 3-4 coordinated degree program and attend UICVM after only three years at Augustana.

In the past 10 years, Augustana students have been accepted into 13 different veterinary medicine schools, including UICVM. Since 2006, 27 of the 29 students who have interviewed at UICVM have been accepted.

"Augustana has a great reputation with veterinary medicine schools because of their history with our students," said Dr. Darrin Good, a biology professor and one of two advisors for pre-vet students at Augustana. "The rigor of Augustana's academics is respected among graduate schools; these schools know our pre-vet students are challenged not only in the sciences but across the curriculum."

Opportunities afforded by Augustana's pre-vet program are attracting the attention of prospective students. The number of first-year students interested in the college's pre-vet program has doubled in the past four years.
