Augustana College

The Augustana Flute and Clarinet Choirs performed a spring concert together, "The Sounds of Spring," on Wednesday, May 4 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections included "Dance of the Cygnets" from "Swan Lake" by P.I. Tchaikovsky, among others. The choirs were directed by Janet Stodd and Susan Schwaegler.

Several seniors performed together in their final recital on Sunday, May 8 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections included "Send in the Clowns" from "A Little Night Music" by Stephen Sondheim, among others. This performance was a perfect representation of all of the hard work and dedication these seniors have put into their music throughout their time at Augustana.

Augustana students performed in a voice seminar on Tuesday, April 26 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections included "Sonntag" by Johannes Brahms, among others.

The Augustana Symphony Orchestra performed a concert on Saturday, April 30 in Centennial Hall. The orchestra was conducted by Daniel Culver as one of his final concerts before retirement after over 40 years of service. The ensemble was joined by the following guests: Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble, conductor Michael Zemek, soprano Sangeetha Rayapati, and tenor Aaron Humble.

Augustana senior Rowan Crow, a history education major of Coal Valley, IL, performed a voice recital on Saturday, April 30 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections included, "Nuit d'etoiles" by Claude Debussy, among others. She was accompanied by Sheila Doak on piano.

The Augustana Percussion Ensemble performed their spring concert on Saturday, April 23 in the Ensemble Room. Selections included "Clapping Music" by Steve Reich, among others. The ensemble was directed by Tony Oliver.

A group of Augustana students performed in a recital on Tuesday, April 19 in Wallenberg Hall. This performance featured student talent in cello, voice, and piano. The students were accompanied by Sheila Doak on piano.

Augustana students Rebecca Knapper and Emmalynn Tully gave a duo vocal performance on Sunday, April 10 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections from the recital included "Chanson d'avril" by George Bizet among others. The students were accompanied by Sheila Doak on piano, Emma Stough and Kayla Jackson on flute, and tenor Jacob Weidner.

Augustana students Ashley Almquist, a instrumental music education major of Hampshire, Ill. and Daniel Walls, a vocal music education and mathematics double major of Rockford, Ill. performed in their senior recital sharing their talents with the Augustana community on Saturday, April 9, 2016. Selections included "Five Bagatelles" by Gerald Finzi, among others. The students were accompanied by Amanda Kramer, Rebecca Strandberg, and Christopher Green on clarinet.

Eight Augustana students performed in a general student recital on Tuesday, April 5 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections included "Sonate in A Major, Op. 12, No. 2" by Ludwig van Beethoven, among others.

Henry Weberpal, a music education and music performance double major from Sycamore, Ill., performed a student cello recital on Sunday, April 17 in Wallenberg Hall at Augustana College. Selections included "Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008" by Johann Sebastian Bach, among others.

Mineo Patrick Yasutake, a music education and performance double major from Glen Ellyn, Ill., performed a student cello recital on Saturday, April 16 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections included "Spiegel im Spiegel" by Arvo Part, among others.

Augustana College Theatre Arts Department in conjunction with Opera@Augustana will present Sweeney Todd, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, in Potter Theatre April 29-May 1 and May 6-8. Sweeney Todd will be the last production in Potter Theatre prior to the move to the new Brunner Theatre Center.

Augustana student Maria Catalano, a psychology and social welfare double major of Bloomingdale, IL., performed in her senior vocal recital on Saturday, April 9 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections included "Esurientes implevit bonis" from "Magnificat" by Antonio Vivaldi, among others. She was accompanied by soprano Victoria Beale and Charles Schmidt on piano.

Augustana student, Jamie Hochmuth, a creative writing and business administration double major of Medina, MN., performed a student voice recital on Saturday, April 16 in Wallenberg Hall. She performed pieces by Dietrich Buxtehude, Richard Strauss, among others.

Augustana senior John Whitson, a vocal music education and composition major from Geneva, Ill., composed works that were performed at his senior recital on Wednesday, March 16 at 8 p.m. in Wallenberg Hall.

Augustana students Rachel Auton on trombone, a music education major of Hartland, WI. and Lauren Heiberger on horn, a music education major of Mundelein, IL. will perform in their student recital sharing their talents with the Augustana community on Saturday, April 2 at 4 p.m. in Wallenberg Hall.

A group of Augustana students showcased their vocal talents in a Voice Seminar held on Tuesday, March 22 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections included "Alma del Core" by Antonio Caldara, among others. Students were accompanied by Sheila Doak on piano.

This year's Play Production class will stage the drama "Gross Indecency," about Oscar Wilde's trials on charges of sodomy. The production is the student-directed culmination with performances taking place March 18-20 in Bergendoff Hall's Black Box Theatre.

To conclude their Midwest tour, the Augustana Symphonic band will return home to perform the music they traveled with on their annual performance tour. The concert will take place on March 12 at 8 p.m. in Centennial Hall.

After a beautiful tour of California, the Augustana Choir will return home to share the music they created while on their annual performance tour. The concert will take place on March 11 at 8 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, IA.

The Augustana Concert Band and Horn Choir performed their concert on Saturday, Febuary 13 in Centennial Hall. This group of student musicians shared their talent with the Augustana community. Selections included several pieces including "Summer Dances" by Brian Balmages, among others. The students were joined by the Rock Island High School Band.

Augustana student, Marisa Hollems performed a student flute and piccolo recital on Saturday, January 30 in Wallenberg Hall. She performed George Gershwin's "Pastoral Svit" by Gunnar de Frumerie, among others. She was accompanied by Gail Baldwin on piano.

The Augustana Symphony Orchestra performed their winter concert on Saturday, February 13 in Centennial Hall. This group of student musicians shared their talent with the Augustana community. Selections included pieces such as "Tragic Overture" by Johannes Brahms and "Serenade for String Orchestra" by Sir Edward Elgar, among others.

Augustana students Ellenelle Gilliam and Steven Mondloch performed in their student recital sharing their vocal talents with the Augustana community on Sunday, February 7, 2016. Selections included Bach's "Ich esse mit Freuden from Ich bin vergnut mit meinem Glucke" and Barbara Strozzi's "Lilla dici ch'io non t'amo", among others. Students were accompanied by Robert Elfline on piano.

Augustana student, Brian Hinkley, a music performance major of Lombard, Ill., performed a student piano recital on Saturday, February 6 in Wallenberg Hall. He performed Paule Maurice's "Tableaux de Provence", among others. He was accompanied by Rachel Auton on trombone, Sarah Bromberger on oboe, and by alto saxophone Elijah Olson.

The Augustana Jazz Combo performed their winter concert on Wednesday, February 10 in Larson Hall in Bergendoff Hall. Eleven student musicians shared their talent with the Augustana community. Selections included several pieces including "On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson, "The Pink Panther" by Henry Mancini, among others.

The Augustana Jazz Ensemble performed their winter concert on Friday, February 5 in the Centennial Hall. Twenty-one student musicians shared their talent with the Augustana community. Selections included several pieces including "Strike Up the Band" by Gershwin & Gershwin and arranged by Sammy Nestico, among others.

The Augustana College Symphonic Band will perform throughout the Midwest and Colorado as part of the band's 2016 tour, beginning in the Chicago suburbs and continuing west to Kansas City, Hays, Kansas and Denver.

The Augustana theatre season's theme of Crime and Justice was fully present in this powerful expressionistic drama about a young woman in the 1920s, whose limitations and restrictions ultimately pushed her to commit a horrible crime. Machinal, which means "automatic" or "mechanical" in French, is based loosely on the murder trial of Ruth Snyder and her lover. This show was presented in Potter Theatre within Bergendoff Hall of Fine Arts (3701 7th Avenue) on October 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and October 18 and 25 at 1:30 p.m.
