Founded in 1860, Augustana College is a selective four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences. Augustana is recognized for the innovative program Augie Choice, which provides each student up to $2,000 to pursue a high-impact learning experience such as study abroad, an internship or research with a professor. Current students and alumni include 165 Academic All-Americans, two Nobel laureates, 13 college presidents and other distinguished leaders. Rebecca Strandberg performed junior recital

Augustana junior, Rebecca Strandberg, a piano performance major of Crystal Lake, Ill., performed her junior recital on Sunday, February 8 in Wallenberg Hall. She performed David Popper's "Requiem, Op. 66" and Shumann's "Funf Stucke im Volkston, Op. 102" among others. She was accompanied by Patrick Yasutake, Henry Weberpal and Paige Phelps on cello, Scott Reynolds on clarinet, and Jessica Gerdish on viola.

Augustana junior Maria Catalano of Bloomingdale, Ill. and junior John Whitson of Aurora, Ill. performed in their student recital sharing their talents with the Augustana community. Catalano's selections included "The Man I Love" and "That Certain Feeling" by George Gershwin. Whitson performed Strauss's "Allersellen" and "Morgen". Additional pieces as well as duets were performed. The students were accompanied by Sheila Doak.

Augustana theatre students present Katrina: the K Word

Augustana's theatre department continues its season with Katrina: the K Word, a performance presented by a 300-level course focusing on play production. Katrina: the K Word is conceived and created by Lisa S. Brenner and Suzanne M. Trauth and presented by special arrangement with the authors. Katrina: the K Word is an original play inspired by true stories of individuals impacted by Hurricane Katrina a decade ago.

Augustana Symphonic Band to tour southern United States

The Augustana Symphonic Band will depart for its annual tour to the southern United States including performances in Kansas City, Tulsa, Dallas, Austin, Houston, New Orleans and St. Louis. The tour will begin on February 20 with their return to Augustana College on February 28.

"Whistler and His Contexts," an exhibition currently on display in the Augustana Teaching Museum of Art, was co-curated by two senior art history majors. The exhibit examines the works of James McNeill Whistler and artists working before, during and after his career, in an effort to understand Whistler's life and art in their context.

Augustana students commissioned to draw maps for book

At Augustana College, Dr. Jenniger Burnham's cartography class was commissioned by Dr. Curt Roseman '63 to draw maps for his book, "A Century of Players, Performers, and Pagaents: Wharton Field House and Browning Field, Moline, Illinois," co-written by Dr. Roseman and Diann Moore. Seven of the students' maps were selected for publication.

The show exhibits work by studio art and graphic design majors who graduate this year. Displaying artwork in a variety of media, from painting and photography to quilting and vide, the exhibition is the culmination of the students' Senior Inquiry process and overall academic experience.

The Augustana Choir to tour the Midwest

The Augustana Choir, from Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, will tour the Midwest from February 21-March 1. The nine-day, nine-concert tour will take nearly 60 students from as far north as the Twin Cities to as far east as Cincinnati, Ohio. Admission to all concerts is free, and a freewill offering will be accepted.

Augustana's Handel Oratorio Society presented 'A Christmas Messiah'

Augustana College's Handel Oratorio Society presented its new take on a Quad-Cities Christmas tradition, 'A Christmas Messiah,' on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15. The Handel Oratorio Society began performing choral and orchestral works in 1881. "This year we focused the performance on the Christmas portion of the piece," said Jon Hurty, conductor of the society and director of choral activities at Augustana.

During the next two weekends, Augustana students will present the cult classic, Bat Boy: The Musical, described by The New York Times as "a jaggedly imaginative mix of skewering humor and energetic glee." The unusual storyline is based on a 1992 Weekly World News article about a half-boy, half-bat named Bat Boy. Augustana's theatre arts department and Opera@Augustana have joined together to deliver six performances of Bat Boy: The Musical in Potter Theatre, inside Bergendoff Hall of Fine Arts (3701 7th Ave.) between April 27 and May 6. Local students work on display at Augustana College

Five Augustana seniors majoring in art will display their work at the Augustana College Art Museum (3703 7th Ave.), as part of the Senior Studio Art Exhibition. The exhibition opens Saturday, April 28, and runs through Saturday, May 19. The museum is open from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, and closed for final exams May 15-17. The exhibition is the culmination of a process and the student's academic experience at Augustana. The process, known as Senior Inquiry, is a signature of the Augustana experience. It encourages seniors to demonstrate the critical thinking and communication skills they've developed and to reflect on the value of their work for the common good. Among the students:

Students performed in Augustana College Four Choirs Concert

Cantilena Augustana, Wennerberg Men's Chorus, Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble and the Ascension Singers were the four choirs that came together to perform one concert on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Augustana College. The choirs include: aEUR? Cantelina Augustana, directed by Sonja Hurty, adjunct professor of music, includes female students from all classes and majors who sing for pleasure. aEUR? Wennerberg Men's Chorus, directed by Howard Eckdahl, fellowship instructor of music, consists of male students who sing for enjoyment and have an enhanced appreciation of choral music. aEUR? Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble, directed by Dr. Michael Zemek, assistant professor of music, is a select ensemble for women who want to develop advanced choral skills. aEUR? Dr. Zemek also directs the Ascension Singers, a group made up of singers from both Cantelina Augustana and Wennerberg's Men Chorus. According to Dr. Zemek, the Four Choirs Concert was an opportunity for students to share what they had been studying and preparing throughout the term with their families and the community. After a two-week concert tour in Germany and Austria, the Augustana Choir will return to the Quad Cities for a home concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 9, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady Street, Davenport. Under the direction of Dr. Jon Hurty, the choir will present an a cappella choir concert, with works ranging from a Gregorian chant to a Haitian NA?el.
