Seventeen Augustana College student research assistants are assisting with the inventory of water service lines in the village of Port Byron, Ill.

Student research assistants were joined by President Andrea Talentino and Dr. Dianna Shandy for a morning of knocking on doors in Rock Island to encourage residents to report the material of their water service lines.

Augustana College senior Brett Kuras is interning this summer with the college's Office of Communication and Marketing Department.

Three Augustana College students researched the painted dog species this summer in Zimbabwe. Offered through Augustana's CORE office, the internship aligned perfectly with what the students want to pursue in the future - wildlife conservation and rehabilitation, and wildlife medicine.

Augustana College's Niah Tyler, of Silvis, Ill., is interning this summer with a geophysical research program in New Mexico.

Emily Martin, a geology and enviornmental studies double major, is interning with Northwest Youth Conservation Corps to contirubte to conservation projects around Washington state and northern parts of Oregon.

Augustana students completed internships across the nation this summer, ranging from working with big corproations to nonprofit organizations. Augustana College's CORE (careers, opportunities, research and exploration) is a one-stop shop to help prepare students for impactful internships, research and study away programs. Augustana firmly believes that experiences outside of the classroom create well-rounded graduates that are ready for the workforce. Augustana students are also eligible for Augie Choice, a $2000 grant that supports internships, research or study away programs. Students have used this to live in New York while interning for CBS, travel to Australia, conduct groundbreaking medical research in Texas and more.

Augustana College's Makayla Palm is interning in Utah with the Burpee Museum of National History with the museum's vertebrate paleontology research program.

Augustana College student Marisa Carioscia completed a presitigous research internship at the Baylor College of Medicine. Carioscia worked under a medical illustrator to gain knowledge and skills in the field of medical illustratoin, and how to use those skills to create illustrations that can be used to visually communicate the outcomes of a specific surgery. Medical illustration is an essential resource used in the medicinal world that takes confusing subject matter and communicates it visually, making things easier to comprehend. Carioscia is marjoing in biology and graphic design, and will be a senior this fall. Augustana College student Natalie Hardy completed a presitigous research internship at the MD Anderson Center. Her research is centered around existential distress in oncology and she is writing a philosophical paper, case study and narrative piece to be published by end of summer. Natalie is in the process of applying to graduate programs in philosophy and health care ethics. Augustana College student Juliana Pinheiro completed a presitigous research internship at the Baylor College of Medicine. She studied glioblastomas, the most common and aggressive adult brain tumor. The lab where she was interned is trying to develop a new neuroimmune language that will be used for characterization, diagnosis and clinical purposes. Augustana College student Erin Cygan completed a presitigous research internship at the Baylor College of Medicine. Cygan's reserach focused on rheumatoid arthritis and identifying a potetential treatment to treat the disesase that otherwise has no definitive cure. Augustana College student Justin Verlinden completed a presitigous research internship at the Baylor College of Medicine. He took part in testing novel brain imaging methods as part of a larger Alzheimer's Disease research project taking place in the lab. Augustana College student Brittany Hatlestad completed an internship at the Baylor College of Medicine SMART Program where she spent time at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute. Hatlestad studied genetics, molecular analysis and behavioral outcomes. She validated the creation of an animal model that can be used to further research a rare genetic disorder. Augustana College student Andrew Winkelman completed an internship with the Department of Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center. During the internship, Winkelman looked at different imaging methodologies such as MRI, PET and CT scans, and conturing the different glands and other tissues in the head. The goal of this research is to better predict dry mouth - a common side effect to radiation therapy. Augustana junior political science major Sarah Meirose, from Quincy, Ill., was named a Freedom Scholar by the Fund for American Studies. This past summer Meirose spent her summer in Washington D. C. on an academic internship and was chosen as one of top interns in her program, earning her another opportunity in February.

Alicia Oken, Class of 2013, is interning at the Office of Digital Strategy at the White House, with a focus on the White House website and specifically the blog. Her main duties include preparing and drafting blog posts, updating website content, and assisting with Web videos. Oken graduated from Augustana with a degree in political science, communication studies and multimedia journalism.

Devan Peterson, an Augustana College senior from Aledo, Ill., grew up playing with John Deere tractors at his family farm. He knew from the first day of his first year at Augustana that he wanted to have a career tied to agriculture. This passion has helped to fuel his career orientation throughout college and a full-time job opportunity with John Deere in the Accounting Finance Development Program next summer.

Earlier this year six Augustana teacher candidates and Dr. Deborah Bracke, assistant professor of education, spent five days at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind at St. Augustine, Fl., as part of the students' Augie Choice involvement experience.
