Founded in 1860, Augustana College is a selective four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences. Augustana is recognized for the innovative program Augie Choice, which provides each student up to $2,000 to pursue a high-impact learning experience such as study abroad, an internship or research with a professor. Current students and alumni include 165 Academic All-Americans, two Nobel laureates, 13 college presidents and other distinguished leaders. The college enrolls 2,500 students and is located along one of the world’s most important waterways, the Mississippi River, in a community that reflects the diversity of the United States. www.augustana.edu

Students compete in scholarship competition

Nearly 600 high school seniors competed in Augustana College's annual Scholarship Competition on January 17, 2015. Students competed for $4,000 scholarships awarded by each academic department at Augustana. Winners of the scholarships will be notified by March 1, 2015.

Online voting continues until Feb. 15 for the People's Choice Award in Augustana College's Good Fit T-shirt Photo Contest, where potential first-year students are eligible to win one of five $1,000 scholarships to Augustana. For their photos, students must wear an Augustana T-shirt.

Students complete debate season at Augustana

Augustana's debate team rounded out the 2011-2012 season successfully. A winter term packed with nationwide debates prepared the Augustana Debate Union (ADU) for post season success. The ADU completed their 2011-2012 campaign by competing with 163 other teams at the Cross Examination Debate Associations National Championship Tournament (CEDA). This tournament, held at the University of Oklahoma, recognizes the top competitive and individual achievements for the seven month debate season. Augustana student JohnDaniel Engelhardt, who will be a junior next year, was selected to CEDA's All-American Debate Team, a group of the top 30 debaters in the country. CEDA marked the end of the Viking's twelve tournament season. "The Vikings have a lot of success to proudly look back upon," said Max Archer, visiting instructor in speech communications and ADU advisor. "We are proud of the debate team. The debaters work very hard in preparing for debates, travel long hours, and have to deal with the stress and anticipation of competition," said Dr. Sharon Varallo, professor of communications at Augustana College. "The debate topics are always challenging, but debaters are unafraid of a challenge," continued Dr. Varallo. Aiding in the team's success this year included:

Local students place in Illinois journalism competition

Ten student journalists from Augustana College, including a number of students from the local area, were recently chosen as winners in the Illinois Press Association (ICPA)'s annual journalism competition. The students broke a school record by earning 17 awards, including five first-place awards, from the ICPA. The awards recognize the variety of skills, including writing, photography, design and multimedia reporting, that the students exhibit in their work.
