Founded in 1860, Augustana College is a selective four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences. Augustana is recognized for the innovative program Augie Choice, which provides each student up to $2,000 to pursue a high-impact learning experience such as study abroad, an internship or research with a professor. Current students and alumni include 165 Academic All-Americans, two Nobel laureates, 13 college presidents and other distinguished leaders. Augustana's Aubrey Waddick honored as a Lincoln Laureate

The Lincoln Academy of Illinois recently honored outstanding senior college students during the annual Student Laureate Convocation, at the Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield. The ceremony recognized a top student from each college and university in Illinois, with Aubrey Waddick, a native of Algonquin, Ill., representing Augustana College.

Augustana students participated in gripping theatre production of 'Machinal'

The Augustana theatre season's theme of Crime and Justice was fully present in this powerful expressionistic drama about a young woman in the 1920s, whose limitations and restrictions ultimately pushed her to commit a horrible crime. Machinal, which means "automatic" or "mechanical" in French, is based loosely on the murder trial of Ruth Snyder and her lover. This show was presented in Potter Theatre within Bergendoff Hall of Fine Arts (3701 7th Avenue) on October 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and October 18 and 25 at 1:30 p.m.

This summer seven Augustana students are participating in full-scale scientific research projects under the guidance of their faculty advisors, gaining experience to utilize in graduate school and careers after college. Each summer research project is funded through an Augustana Summer Student Research Fellowship.

Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill., held its spring commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 24. Brandon Busteed, executive director of Gallup Education, delivered the commencement speech. Around 600 students participated in the ceremony.

Student named to Augustana College spring term Dean's List

Augustana College announced 892 students were named to the Dean's List for the 2014-2015 spring term. Students who have earned this academic honor have maintained a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a four-point scale for courses taken during the term.

Student awarded the prestigious SCA Glenn T. Seaborg Science Scholarship

Augustana senior Abdul Rahman Merhi has been named the 2015 recipient of the SCA Glenn T. Seaborg Science Scholarship. This scholarship includes participation in the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar, which is a prestigious conference that draws together 25 of the most outstanding young scientists from around the globe.

Brandon Wills wins Hasselmo Award for Academic Pursuit

Augustana junior Brandon Wills won the 2015-16 Hasselmo Award for Academic Pursuit from Augustana College. The Hasselmo Prize was established by Dr. Nils Hasselmo '57, in recognition of the ways in which his Augustana education both informed and transformed his life and vocational calling. Dr. Hasselmo served as the president of the University of Minnesota from 1988 until his retirement in 1997. From 1998 to 2006, he was president of the Association of American Universities.

The Augustana Jazz Ensemble performed its spring concert on Friday, May 8 in Centennial Hall. Sixteen student musicians shared their talent with the Augustana community. Selections included "The Next Chapter" by Patty Darling and "Struttin' With Some Barbeque" by Lillian Armstrong and Don Raye, arranged by Mike Tomaro, among others.

The Augustana Flute and Clarinet Choir performed their spring concert on Wednesday, May 6 in Wallenberg Hall. Sixteen student musicians shared their talent with the Augustana community. Flute choir selections included, "The Last Rose of Summer", a traditional Irish song and "Tag!" by David L. Wells, among others. Clarinet Choir selections included "Argentine" by David Bennett and "Klezmer Jam" by Valentin Hude, among others.

Augustana seniors Justin Lebo, a vocal music education major of Palatine, Ill. and Hillary Taylor, a vocal music education major of Dekalb, Ill. performed in their student recital sharing their talents with the Augustana community on Sunday, May 3, 2015. Selections included Bach's "Händen, die sich nicht verschliessen" and Ernest Bacon's "Five Poems of Emily Dickinson", among others. Students were accompanied by soprano Hannah Buto, Jessica Gerdish on viola and Sheila Doak on piano.

Six Augustana seniors performed in a Seniors' recital on Sunday, May 10 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections included "Regnava nel silenzio" by Gaetano Donizetti, sung by soprano Emily Webb, and "Rhapsody for Euphonium" by James Carrow, played by Gabrielle Potter, among others. Students were accompanied by Charles Schmidt and Robert Elfline on piano.

The Augustana Percussion Ensemble performed their spring concert on Saturday, April 25 in the Ensemble Room in Bergendoff Hall. Ten student musicians shared their talent with the Augustana community. Selections included several traditional pieces and "Rock Trap" by William Schinstine, among others. The students were accompanied by Marisa Hollems on piccolo.

Augustana senior, Hannah Buto, a vocal music education major of Lake Zurich, Ill., performed a student vioce recital on Saturday, May 2 in Wallenberg Hall. She performed George Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "The Last Rose of Summer" by John Whitson, among others. She was accompanied by mezzo soprano Hillary Taylor, Jessica Gerdisch on viola, and Sheila Doak on piano.

The Augustana Symphony Orchestra performed its spring concert on Saturday, May 2 in Centennial Hall. Over sixty student musicians shared their talent with the Augustana community. Selections included Aaron Copland's "Our Town - Music from the Film Score" and "Siegried Idyll" by Richard Wagner, among others. Students were joined by faculty members from the music department.

Augustana sophomore, Brian Hinkley, a music performance major of Lombard, Ill., performed a student piano recital on Tuesday, April 28 in Wallenberg Hall. He performed Ludwig van Beethoven's "Piano Sonata in C Minor, Op. 10, No. 1" and "Two Rhapsodies, Op. 79" by Johannes Brahms, among others.

Students elected to Augustana's Phi Beta Kappa

Forty-eight students at Augustana College, in Rock Island, Ill., recently were elected into the college's Phi Beta Kappa chapter. This national academic honor society recognizes scholarly achievement, character, integrity, and independence of mind. Members are elected by faculty. Election is less a reward for past success than a recognition of exceptional promise for future growth and achievement.

Augustana College awarded six students the 2015 Eddie Mabry Diversity Award. The Eddie Mabry award recognizes academic work by dedicated students who have demonstrated a significant commitment to enhancing multicultural awareness at Augustana. Submissions included works that explore issues related to diversity and multiculturalism such as social class, culture, race/ethnicity, sex/gender, sexuality, disability and religion.

Sixteen Augustana students performed in a voice seminar on Tuesday, April 28 in Wallenberg Hall. Selections included "The Sky Above the Roof" by Ralph Vaughan Williams, sung by mezzo soprano Sara Naftzger, and Stephen Sondheim's "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" from Sweeney Todd, sung by soprano Victoria Beale. Students were accompanied by Michelle Crouch, Sheila Doak, Howard Eckdahl and Justin Lebo on piano.
